The campaign was launched in June 2025 by the Fresh Four founding journalists: Mario Bartel, Janis Cleugh, Theresa McManus, and Cornelia Naylor with the support of the Union Cooperative Initiative and Unifor Local 2000.

We launched this campaign due to the sudden closure of the Burnaby Now, New Westminster Record, and Tri-City News in the Spring of 2025. We believe that local news is vital to a strong democracy and healthy connected community.

The campaign is operated under a steering committee agreement through the Union Cooperative Initiative, a registered community service cooperative in the Province of British Columbia. Under BC law, community service co-ops have a similar status to that of non-profit societies.
