On April 17, Glacier Media closed the Record, New Westminster’s hometown newspaper, as well as the Burnaby NOW and the Tri-City News. Long before I embarked on a 34-year career with the Record and Burnaby Now in May 1991, I read The Columbian and the Royal City Record newspapers to learn about all the happenings in the city I’ve called home all my life.

I’ve joined with veteran journalists Cornelia Naylor (Burnaby Now), as well as Mario Bartel and Janis Cleugh (Tri-City News), to start the Save Our Local News campaign.

Last week, we launched the Save Our Local News fundraising drive to help create a non-profit co-operative. The plan is to launch a fresh, local publication that’s run by the workers and owned by the community.

We strongly believe in the critical role that reliable, robust local news sources play in connecting neighbours, building community and shining a light on the happenings in New Westminster, Burnaby and the Tri-Cities. In an era of misinformation and division, it is more important than ever to have a trusted local news source.

How can you get involved? If you are a local business, you can commit to support this endeavour by taking out advertising. If you’re a community member, you can donate to the Save Our Local News fundraising campaign. If you volunteer, you can sign up to help spread the word. You can also register to become a future member or subscriber.

Together, we can put community back into community news.
