Can cooperatives save newspapers? They did in Québec.
In 2019, residents across Québec were faced with a mass closure of local news outlets due to corporate cuts. Workers, readers and community members came together, formed a community-accountable news co-operative and saved six local papers.
With the help of the Union Cooperative Initiative and support of their local union, the founding four journalists have spent months preparing plans to launch a new local news non-profit. On September 11, the founding four journalists: Mario Bartel, Cornelia Naylor, Janis Cleugh, and Theresa McManus, officially signed their cooperative incorporation documents.
